The Sculpfun E1 (or E1 Pro / E1 Pro Dual) is a fully enclosed (Class 1) desktop laser engraver that achieves speeds of up to 600 mm/s using a CoreXY motion system. The standout feature of the Dual version is the combination of a 12W/21W diode laser (455 nm) and a 3W infrared laser (1064 nm), which allows for both cutting organic materials and high-precision engraving of metals and plastics.

Package Contents and Unboxing
The package contains all the components needed to get started right away. Since it is a closed system, the installation effort is minimal compared to open-frame lasers.

CoreXY-Mechanics
Unlike traditional Cartesian axis systems, the E1 uses a high-precision CoreXY setup. The motors are permanently mounted to the frame, which drastically reduces the moving mass. This enables extremely fast changes in direction without significant vibration, resulting in sharper engravings at speeds of up to 600 mm/s.
Electronics and mainboard
The core of the Sculpfun E1’s control system is based on modern 32-bit architecture, providing the processing power needed for complex camera analysis and fast CoreXY calculations. The mainboard features an STM32 processor and an ESP32 chip. The STM is not visible in the pictures; it is mounted on the back of the mainboard.
Connections and Interfaces
- USB port for standard PC operation via LightBurn or LaserGRBL.
- Wi-Fi module for wireless data transmission and control via the Sculpfun app.
- Security USB port: The machine will only start if the correct USB key is inserted.
- Camera connection: The camera is recognized by the computer as a webcam and can be used by LightBurn for camera functions.
- Air Assist: The Air Assist is also connected to the back of the machine; this applies to both the power supply and the air inlet.
Lasermodule(s)
12W + 21W diode laser (455 nm)
- Function: Perfect for cutting and engraving organic materials.
- Focus Point: Thanks to beam convergence, the beam is extremely compressed to 0.06 × 0.08 mm at 21W! That’s exceptionally good for this power class.
- Cutting Performance: Effortlessly cuts through plywood, MDF, acrylic, and leather.
As you can see in the picture, the 21-W module comes very close to matching the quality of a 3-W module. That’s really, really good.
3W Infrared Laser (1064 nm)—Available only in the dual version
- Function: Specially designed for high-precision engraving of pure metals (gold, silver, copper, stainless steel, aluminum) and a wide variety of plastics.
- Focus point: Extremely fine at 0.03 × 0.03 mm for microscopically sharp details.
Integrated Camera System
The HD camera built into the lid enables a fully visual workflow:
- Work Area Preview: Transmits a live image of the loaded material directly to the control software (Sculpfun or LightBurn).
- Precise Alignment: Designs can be placed exactly on scrap pieces or uneven objects using drag-and-drop.
- Batch Engraving: Detects multiple objects placed side by side and automatically distributes the engraving patterns (if the corresponding software supports this feature).
Firmware and Software Control
The E1’s firmware is based on a customized version of GRBL by default. Work is currently underway on a grblHAL-based firmware, but it has not yet been released.
Supported Software:
Since the firmware is grbl-based, all standard GRBL senders can be used. Most common in this case are:
- Sculpfun Space: The manufacturer’s own free app/software. Ideal for beginners, as it natively supports camera and Wi-Fi functions without requiring complex setup.
- LightBurn: The industry standard for advanced users. Also supports camera calibration for the E1.
- LaserGRBL: Free open-source alternative (Windows only).
Safety functions
Please note: It is unclear whether these features would pass inspection in Germany, and you should therefore assume that the laser CANNOT be used as a Class 1 device.
As a Class 1-certified system, the E1 features comprehensive safety measures that, according to the manufacturer, ensure safe operation in the home or in schools:
- Lid-Open Auto Pause: When the lid is opened, the laser process stops immediately.
- Enclosed Housing: Filters harmful laser light and prevents direct contact with the beam.
- Integrated Exhaust: A built-in fan extracts fumes and particles and vents them outside via a hose (optionally expandable with the Sculpfun SP1 Air Purifier).
- Emergency Stop Switch & Key Lock: Quick physical shutdown in case of danger.
Typical Modifications and Upgrades
The E1 comes with some essential accessories right out of the box:
- Rotary Roller: For engraving cylindrical objects such as glasses, bottles, or cups.
- SP1 Air Purifier: An active recirculating air filter for safe indoor operation without a direct connection to a window.
- Machine Riser: Allows for the loading of significantly thicker workpieces or the convenient use of the rotary roller.
